New graphics card

Hi there.

I am purchasing a new system and I would like to know the main differences between 2 graphics cards, one pretty old and one that has just come out.

The older one is the 256MB nVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS. The new card is the 256MB nVIDIA GeForce 8500GT.

Could anyone give any advice as to which one is better for performance and value for money, as to upgrade from the 7600 to the 8500 is only £10.

Any help greatly appreciated.

8500gt is dx10 capable. 7600gs is dx9. if the new pc comes with vista you will get the dx10 effects in games that are relesed in the future with the 8500gt.

So in the future you will be able to use the dx10 feature that is being heavily advertised, but am not really a serious gamer, although a do enjoy the odd game now and then. On balance, will the 7600 give good performance or is it better making my system compliant with future technology?

I would get the 8500gt as the 7 series cards are now obsolete.

Also remember to get Vista (not XP) with the new PC to take advantage of DX10. G

Worth remembering that the 8500GT, although a DX10 card, is also the slowest of the DX10 cards yet released. It's no "ball of fire" by today's standards.

I would definitely choose the 8500GT over the 7600GS, though.
