Having just watched the brilliant first of the BBC Planet Earth series and seeing a preview of next weeks episode, I've decided to buy a DVD recorder to record them. What are the best ones you can buy for about £150?

It depends if you want a hard drive or a DVD-/+ disk type.

I know there's been quite a bit of criticism of Savastore in recent weeks but, even so, this might be worth considering at £59.99:

Is having a built in hard drive important? I've seen this one on ebuyer:

Stuartli, I cant access that link. Can you give me name of model, make...?

The link works fine for me. Try right clicking on it and selecting Open in New Window (or tab).

It's at Savapoint.com under Home Electronics and the model is the Inventive DVD Recorder with Progressive Scan and 8 Free discs.

Try cutting and pasting:

after www. savapoint.com (close up the space)

cyberhome 1600 for £68

I have just switched from a recorder without HDD to one with a 160Gb HDD. I much prefer the HDD machine - much quicker to start recording just when you need to and not to have to bother about whether the DVDRW you have used 10 times before will be OK the 11th time (this was my biggest problem with the first machine).
So, IMHO, go for a recorder with HDD.

For the cheaper range (£69.99), try Asda or Tesco's. Both recorders seem to have good reports.

But if you are looking for a better product, then go for the H/D model (cheapest about £149.99)

I have a Cyberhome DVR 1600, £68 from Asda. It is a superb machine in every way. It will play anything (MP3, slide shows, Wav etc., etc.), has more features than you would ever use in a lifetime and is easy to hack for any region. No point in spending anything more. I have had Cyberhome DVD players before and they are built like tanks as well as being reliable.

For the price it looks fantastic value. At the moment I am using a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder and RAM discs. However, the Cyberhome DVR 1600 looks like a good cheap standby.
