need advice on spec for new PC

Hi - I need to buy a new PC to replace my ageing Mesh. I've been really happy with the Mesh, but like me, it's getting old and slow :-(.
Will probably keep old monitor so need base unit and maybe keyboard/mouse.
Am not that knowledgeable on the interior workings of a PC so need some help in what to get.

Main use is internet/office etc (not gaming).
I am happy to pay for good spec, but obviously don't want to buy something I don't need. So I guess I want the best possible to suit my needs - I don't want "budget". I have no specific budget.

Spec of current PC is :
Processor Intel P4 3.0Ghz
Memory 512Mb PC3200 DDR 400 Mhz
Motherboard Asus P4S533-VM FSB 533/400
Hard Drive 120Gb 8Mb buffer 7200rpm
Video Card 256MB nVIDIA GeForce FX5600se
Optical Drive 16XDVD-Rom + 52x CDRW
Sound - Soundblaster compatible multi channel audio
speakers Creative soundblaster SBS250
Monitor - 17" Sharp DVI
That lot cost be about £1200 about 6 years ago.

So really what I want to know is "what is the rough equivalent spec now compared to that from 6 years ago?"

something with a core 2 duo cpu, 4g or ram, you could get a 22" or 24" widescreen and have a lot faster pc and spend a lot less than a grand.

Probably won't bother getting new monitor - so don't really need to factor that in.

Any recommendations on what OS to get - prob looking at Vista Home Premium, but 32bit or 64? or stick with XP? Or...?

Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad Core CPU (or a Phenom, even)

Might as well start with 4GB RAM

AMD 4770 is probably best value GPU atm

500GB or larger hard drive

Blu Ray drives are trendy buit hardly essential
