Laptop advice

I'm looking for a laptop with a budget of £1,000. When I bought my PC it was quite easy - an AMD 64 CPU, SATA HD, 19" TFT. But I dont know much about laptops.

My priorities are good applications and games performance (doesnt have to be top end, but good enough to handle latest games and run multiple tasks). It needs to be stylish and well built with good battery life. How do I choose between procesors? Are AMD also beter value overall than Intel when it comes to mobile CPUs? Which CPUs are the best for laptops? A large screen is also important (17inch widescreen?). I quite like the wide screen Evesham laptops and PC World seem to have some good deals (wouldn't consider them for a desktop PC though) Are laptop screens affected by response rates, like TFT monitors?

I would seriously consider one of these.
