Intel or AMD

I'm looking at getting a new base unit. Can anyone advise me as to which processor I should go for- AMD or Intel.

AMD Athlons are obviously cheaper than Pentium chips but what about performance?

Does the latest 800 FSB of Pentiums better the Athlons 400 FSB? And does Hyper Threading technology make much difference?

Best if you say what you will be using your pc for.
ie
Games/internet/video editing etc

Then either will do I think AMD has a slight edge on games.

Intel more for Video editing I am led to believe.

Both processors are fine for your purposes and I don't think a mere mortal will be able to notice much of a difference other than in terms of price. I would buy an AMD and spend the saving on an upgraded graphics card.

That is what I did, when posed with the choice in July this year and I went for an Atlon 2800 XP with the Barton Core. With this processor, the latest games fly!

I agree with WAGS, plus with barton cores you can really over clock them ( if your motherboard will take it)

i got a 2500 barton (£80) running at 3000....thats a very big saving.

so far its been superb value (about half the cost of the intel equivalent!)
