How do I run dual monitors on one PC?

I have an NEC Poweredge PC setup with a ATI Club 3D Radeon 9250 PCI graphics card installed. I'm trying to use two monitors on this machine using a vga splitter or 'Y' cable but both displays are showing the same. What I'd like to be able to do is have the display split across the two monitors so that the second is just an extension rather than a duplicate. I have played around with all the windows settings as well as the ATI Catalyst center but can't seem to get it to work. Can anyone help please??

You can only do what you want if your graphics card has two separate connectors to which to attach the two monitors. I have a 9250 which has two conenctors, one VGA and one DVI. You can get adaptors to convert the DVI connector to take a VGA connector.

Many thanks for that scotty. I know I have seen this setup working before (with a splitter) but think I'll go down the route of using a dvi to vga converter as this will probably be wuicker and easier to do. Thanks again!
