Help please - choosing new graphics card

  McBain 00:33 13 Sep 2004

I have a Advent 64 3400+, 320 GB etc.

I want to upgrade the graphcs card from nVidia geforce fx5700 to one of new big boys.

I like looks/cost of nvidia 6800 gt.

Anyone recommend which 6800 gt?

or anyone any thoughts on ati x800 (pro/xt etc) range?

From the little i've read,if you're going for the mid-high end then the Nvidia 6800 gt is the better bet as it consistently outperforms the X800 Pro.However the 6800 Ultra vs the X800 XT isn't so cut and here for some comparisons

Don't forget to take your power supply into account. The Radeon minimum power supply is 300W, but the Nvidia recommends at least 450W. However, I have read repoprts of a 6800GT running quite happily with a 300W PSU. MY personal recommendation would be the Radeon, mainly due to the much cheaper cost.

I think the standard nvidia 6800 is a much better bet. Ebuyer have a version with 3 games at £176 incl. It'll play whatever you want.

There is also some speculaiton that the soon to be released latest version of RivaTuner SW will allow you to re-enable some of the disabled pixel pipelines on the cards...if it does great, but even if not a 6800 at £176 is terrific value.

Hope this is of value

Be careful which version of the 6800 you buy,, the 6800 and 6800 GT are very differnt cards (as the price difference would indicate)
