Graphics Card Upgrade

  ken9 16:47 06 Oct 2004

Hi I have recently upgraded my graphics card from a matrox G400 to a radeon 7000. But it still isn't good enough! I thought it would play games like halo and C&C Generals using DX8 but it goes v. slow. Do you think i have wasted my money (£30) or should i upgrade again?

My specs are: Pentium 3 700mhz, 256 Ram, WinXP and AGP 4X.

If there is anyone out there willing to give advice to me i would be very grateful.

Well to run XP and a game you will need 512 of ram i would first upgrade your ram..

If that dosnt help try a 9600 pro card..not expensive but will run you game very well..or for £130 9800 pro, will run Halo very well

You can buy from here

your 700mhz processor will not be able to get the best out of a top range graphics card. A new base unit with at least a 2.4 processor and 512 of system ram is the best bet.

hi thx for the quick response. I'm not really a 'hardcore' gamer just an occasional one so i don't mind playing at 'low' settings. My AGP is 4X and most cards say 8X so i'm confused although some people say it will work.
My budget will prob stretch to £40 maybe £50 so i'm thinking of looking at the cheaper range like radeon 9200 or geforce 5200. Any recommendations?

All help is appreciated,thank you.

HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon 9550 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-009-HT)

From the link i gave you, it is £50 inc VAT...should do the trick, but i still feel a stick of ram would help to

The graphics card you suggested is £60 including VAT and delivery, which is a bit over, especially if my processor may not get the top power of kinda wories me.
I looked on amazon and i saw an XFX geforce 5200 128mb for £40 or a radeon 9200se for £30 (inc vat and del.) at click here click here

Also you suggested a memory upgrade to 512ram, I think mine is a PC100 DIMM and I haven't found any 256mb ones. Some are v. expensive.

Any more reccomendations?

ken9 , tbh it might be worth waiting or saving a little longer for that could get away with the ram, but it can cause problems not having CPU might be enough to run that game, check the box for details, but it wont really hinder the GF card, as that will take some of the grunt

if you cant find PC100 buy PC133 this will run
just as well at the slower clock speed and its easier to find.

like other people have said your 700mhz processor is begining to get a little bit too slow for the latest games.

You could upgrade your processor pentium 3s are socket 370 and i know they did celerons in that socket upto 1300mhz im just not 100% sure about the pentiums there is definately a 1000mhz one out there.

LOOK on ebay you will prob get one dirt cheap i picked a pentium 3 800mhz up for about £15 including post and packing.

I would certainly be looking at the RAM upgrade first.

Loads on e-bay & well within budget.

Heres an example: click here

& for a graphics card, again try ebay, I think you would get more out of a geforce 4ti4200/4400/4600 than a 9200se or fx5200 - only drawback is you won't get some of the new dx9 effects

hi sorry for the late response...been very busy. I'm not really prepared to bid on ebay for 3rd party items (bad experience). I've seen some geforce4mxs like 420,440,4000 etc. Any good?

Also my friend has a geforce2 with 128ram and 850mhz pc and it runs generals fine (on low settings) how do these compare to the mx's, a radeon 9200se and a geforce 5200...or would a 256>512 ram upgrade make the game run more smoothly on my existing radeon 7000 64mb?

I've seen a pc100 256 on for £20. If you have any suggestions it would be appreciated.
