I want somethng as fast as possible, that will play call of duty 4, and can handle music creation, serif's movie+ 5 and run lots of programs at once. I do wonder if i need to go down the quad core route, would a simple core 2 duo do? what about AMD? if anyone can suggest an equal spec or better for less cash i'd be grateful. i have £550 absolute max.

thx all

The 8500 gfx card is going to be the weak link, as it is underpowered for most new games on decent settings.

If you are after the fastest possible PC then you should also avoid Vista, as the system demands and operating process mean most games run significantly slower than on an XP version, even before DX10 is factored in. This appears to be causing many issues for little gain at the moment, and with the upcoming release of DX10.1 with enforced 4xAA, slower cards below 8800 spec. will struggle to get a decent frame rate on any DX10 game.

you mention the graphics card as being the weak link, but i am only a recreational gamer, not a gaming nut so would it bother me that much? also, as regards the rest of th system what are your thoughts value for money wise?

I also just got offered this spec for £500 inc vat and delivery:

Slim MATX Case with front USB2 ports and Audio
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Socket AM2 (Dual Core 2x 3.0GHz = 6GHz)
Foxconn A690GM2MA-8KRS2H 690G Socket AM2 Onboard VGA 8 channel audio mATX Motherboard
320Gb SATA II Hard drive
2Gb Kingston DDR2 667Mhz Memory Ram
8500GT 512MB DDR2 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
DVD RW+/- DL, Ram
Multimedia Card Reader
19" TFT 500:1 8ms (1280x1024) Black TFT Monitor 3 Years Warranty
Windows XP Professional SP2 pre-installed (No CD)
Nero 7 Essentials
Power Lead

obviously i realise this ain't gonna compete with the quad core but how does this stack up? can it do what i want?

cheers
