is this a good choice of laptop?

  palinka 23:10 12 Jul 2004

A friend has asked my advice about buying a laptop. He's seen an advert for a dell Inspiron 1000.
My experience is limited to my own, an Acer Aspire 1310,which is fine for my purposes - and the friend intends similar usage; and those of various other friends - in particular a Compaq Evo N1015v which is truly awful; grinds along at a snail pace.
I've looked up the spec of the Dell and it seems OK (no floppy drive, but that's not a problem)but in theory my Acer and the awful Compaq have similar spec. How can he, or I, be sure that the Dell will perform as well as my Acer and not as badly as the Compaq?
Any advice welcomed, asap as the offer ends soon.

The Dell inspiron 1000 appears to be available in a number of different configuratons. Can you please tell us more about the one in question.

It's the Configuration A - spec is as follows: 2.2GHz Cel; 256MB DDR RAm; 30GB hard drive; 8 cell NiMH.

2.2GHz Cel; 256MB DDR RAm; 30GB hard drive; 8 cell NiMH.

Would'nt really buy a new Laptop with less than 512MB RAM these day's possibly look at that celeron processor as well Pentium 4's are getting quite cheap now, just seem's very low spec for a new PC.

A Bit more like this would be a better bet:

AMD 2800+ or Pentium 2.8 ghz 512MB DDR 40GB Hardrive, shop abot a bit and this kind of set-up is quite cheap these days.

What does he want to spend on the machine? If you give these details, you may well get some suggestions.

it's the £500 approx price that attracted him. as a member of a local council he can get a grant of £500 for a new computer.

Probably as good as he will get for the price; novatech do have some though around that mark.

thanks Diodorus Siculus and everyone; I'll pass on your advice.
