Gaming PC on a budget?

  Rebecca* 15:03 01 Oct 2004

Hi, I want to buy my son a computer mainly for him to play games on.
But the budget will only run to about £500.
Has anybody got any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you any experience in self build or know anyone who has.?

If so, click here click here click here click here click here click here

This would come in at a few pounds over the £500 mark.

Hi, Sorry for late response been at work.
I don't have any experience with self build so I think I might be better just buying one off the shelf so to speak.
What would be the minimum memory and graphics card to be good enough for gaming?
I wouldn't have this problem buying for myself but I understand you need different specs for gaming, than say for just surfing etc.
Thanks for the info given up to now.

look 4 anything with 512mb ram 1gb ideally

a processor amd are king at the minute bt look for anything around 2800+

Graphics card are difficult to determine but look 4 things like d geforce fx5200 with 128mb

hard disk a good drive should have 120Gb + look 4 160 if you can get it

19" monitor for best looks n results dot pitch no more than .26

make sure u get everything like mouse keyboard

click here is a good start

Don't want to pour cold water on your plans but I dont think you will get a gaming machine that will be of much use at that sort of money but if you want to try I humbly suggest that you try to get > 2.4g pentium or Amd processor, absolute minimum of 512mb ram and a graphics card no less than 128mb but 256mb is better. With these specs your son will be able to play all the latest games at a decent resolution.

click here for a good place to start and it will give you some idea as to what you may require.

Hope this helps Starfox:

IN terms of graphics cards, in my opinion you would at least need a fx 5700 LE. The 5200 is too basic and often not good enough. If he wants to play Far Cry or Doom, then the 5200 is not satisfactory. The fx5900xt is coming down in price, so find one with this included if possible.Hope this helps.

games are differnet, some require great PC, some do not.
