Evesham notebook -ongoing saga

  cottager 22:12 14 Feb 2003

You all may remember the various threads I've run with my complaint against the modem in my Evesham notebook purchased 12 months ago. Within 10 days of purchase I was not happy with the way the modem worked and contacted Evesham.
The notebook had returned to base several times and on it's last visit "home" the modem was changed bit for the same model. The problem was not solved. Evesham technicians have blamed various software from ZoneAlarm and anti virus programme to ISP and phone line. I had the phone line checked and the gain increased to it's maximum. I've had several long, and expensive, conversations with my ISP's techie people and all is okay there. I have uninstalled ZA and AV programmes and still no change.
All through this Evesham technicians have said it isn't possibly the modem that is at fault implying that the user is somewhat incompetent.
When explaining to them that the 5 year old Compaq has the same OS [win 98 SE], same ZA, same AV, same ISP and using the same phone line I have no problems connecting to the internet, the modem connects quickly with very few "Unable to connect" messages and pages download quickly. The Compaq's transfer rates are usually around 45,000 -47,000 kbs whereas the Evesham rarely gets above 33,000 and if it does I have problems downloading email and web pages.
To date the reasons given for the difference have been that the Compaq uses a different port, the Compaq has a different modem!! My reply to the last was that it appears that the 5 yr old Compaq seems to have a superior modem to the 12 month old Evesham.
The upshot of all this is that a friend who is a hardware IT specialist brought his IBM notebook along to try and also went through the Evesham's configurations and after a time came to the conclusion that the modem appeared inferior/second rate. He then fitted a PC card modem and what a difference!!!!! Connects first time all the time, fast download rates, transfer rate is now 48,000 and the modem doesn't go to sleep and forget what it is supposed to do.
So Evesham, please supply me with a PC card modem and I will not plague you any more;-)
