my daughter is shotly replacing her PC which has a dvd player and a cd player in the new one should she opt for a combined dvd/cd writer or what? PC will used for school work, photos and home accounts.

I would susggest a DVD drive and a DVD-RW drive.

Agree. The price of drives is now so cheap.
1.A DVD drive that plays all versions of DVDs. and Cds .
2. A DVD writer that writes all versions of DVDs and CDs. Pretty well all of them write double layer DVDs which might be handy when the price of the Discs reduce.
