I am going to France for a week touring and would like to use my smart phone with google maps/navigation to find my way around small villages (i.e not large towns). Does it work while driving just with gps or do I have to have data roaming on? If so does it use a lot of data? Would it be better to buy a sim card in France. Help?

Have a look at an Android app called :- MAPS.ME

For about £5.00 you can download the basic programme and add free country maps to it. We use it when we go to Europe since it will give the facilities, bus stops, shops etc of just about any village, town or city. It works off-line, so there are no mobile charges and will use GPS to give your location.
