Desktop for under £500

My 5yr old XP Packard Bell desktop is on its last legs and needs replacing, I'm after some advice on what I need to get in my new system. I'm only in need of a base unit; I've had a go at building a system on PCSpecialist but I'm a bit lost when it comes to processors, RAM and graphics cards.

The computer gets used mainly for photo editing (Photoshop and Elements) and video editing (Vegas) along with the usual internet, iTunes, Tweetdeck. It's also used as a DVD player as I have dual screens so ideally I need enough memory for it to be able to run a DVD on one screen whilst I'm writing/browsing /editing on the other.

Can anyone recommend what elements they'd build into a computer for me? Happy to supply more information to help out if needed.

Thank you,

Forgot to mention, the size of the hard drive can be reasonably small as we have a 300Gb external drive and are about to invest in a second 1Tb one. Providing we have fast access to those, we don't need much space in the base unit itself.

I would think an i3 or i5 Clarkdale would be a good bet. you could have:-

Intel i5 550 @ 3.2GHz with 4mb cache
Asus P7H55 USB3 ATX Motherboard
G-Skill 4GB DDR3 Ripjaw C8 1333Mhz (2x2GB)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB SATA II
HIS 5670 IceQ 1GB GDDR5
OCZ 600w ModXStream Power supply
Coolermaster HAF 912 Case

For under £600 delivered (via courier).

You would even have enough to add:-

Coolermaster Hyper 212 CPU Cooler
Upgraded Akasa case fans

And still have change :)

An i3 CPU may be ok, but I'd stick with the i5 :)

Hope it helps.

You could select an alternative case / RAM and PSU to save the additional £100 without a problem.....

Sorry, I hit enter before I could add that.....ooops.
