My brother-in-law is about to buy a Canon IP5200R printer but I noticed you cannot buy compatible cartridges for it at the moment. I have an IP4000 printer - the cartridges look very similar (but no electronic bits). Does anyone know if the cartridges are interchangeable? Compatibles are of course much cheaper at around £2 each vs Canon originals for the IP5200R at £9.99
We established in a related discussion recently that the 5200R appears to have a new cart design with chips, thus breaking with Canon convention. I'm used to being able to pick from quite a few different model numbers when buying compatibles and finding that they fit and work in my i865. I gave some spare carts to a neighbour for his MP500 and they fit fine (no chips). It looks like the 5200R marks a policy change and a sly swipe at the compatibles market. It will remain to see whether any chipped compatibles will appear, but I would assume not.
