Can you suggest/ recommend a laptop, for under £600, that would handle serious photo editing - i.e. converting RAW files, manipulating 50MB tifs etc...
Bigger screen the better, don't mindabout widescreen.

Sound/ gaming ability/ weight/ what it looks like not really important.

Thank you!!

It doesn't exist.

If you want to work with 50MB images, you're going to need 1GB, and you won't find that for £600. At the least, you would need to make an upgrade.

Until recently, I was image editing with 512MB, and it really wasn't enough, with my other apps running.

Have you tried Dell?

£599 (online/web price). If you ring them up, you can probably get a better deal and get RAM doubled to 1G RAM

I just bought similar (different specs)and online price was £934 and negotiated them down to £710.

Just a shade over 600, with 1Gb. But you have to provide your own OS.

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi AMD Turion ML30 1.6GHz/1MB 512MB 60GB DVD±RW 15.4" WLAN XP from ebuyer for £561.95 (delivered) giving you some spare change for a memory upgrade. click here

If you wnet with De M's suggestion, you would need about £40 or so for an extra 512MB from Crucial.

Worth considering, as long as you are confident about doing the upgrade. It's not complex, but I can appreciate that many newbies are unsure.

Does the Acer not have 2 x 256 MB? (ie 2 slots) If so the upgrade suggested would only give 768 MB. In spite of that I also would go for a budget priced Acer, then load it with memory. The Crystal Brite screen on current Acer widescreen laptops is as good as anything I have seen.

  De Marcus™ 17:22 23 Feb 2006

Yes it comes with 2x256 modules, ebuyer however sell 512mb modules for £26 each (£56.45 for 2 modules delivered) making the 1gb total. He could always rid himself of the spare modules on the likes of ebay. A bit more than sloughdan intended on spending but only by a few pound. The crucial site is a bit dearer but their guarantee I suppose is worth the extra.

Many thanks for the suggestions, good to see there are some options. Interested in the Acer, but would still like to hear of any other systems that would fit the bill!
