70 per cent hare value plunge it seems.

It's a shame as Jessops has always offered excellent service.

Let's hope it can pull through although a takeover might be on the cards.

1. Cannot compete with online specialists such as amazon and pixmania and others.
2. John Lewis camera dept probably hurts Jessops on the high street
3. Price of digital cameras now falling rapidly so not so much profit for the retailer
4. Digital cameras now very reliable and most people have enough megapixels for what they need.

It is a shame, way of the world.

although there's 'competing', and there's 'not even coming close'. An SD card I got from amazon for £17ish cost about £80 in Jessops. what?!? I bought a powershot G7 from amazon (£302) - £450 in Jessops. Even other high street stores were only selling it for £350-£370.

Fair point they may give good service, but so do amazon. Once they ditched the price matching thing, theirs are a bit steep.

Jessops pricing policies are designed to get maximum revenue from the unknowledgeable consumer. They also operate under the online brands of cameras2u and tecno where prices are much lower. Shop around !

Also who needs them for developing photos now?
I simply upload my pictures, select the size & send. Couple of days later they are pushed through my door.

As someone who has been a customer of Jessops at one of their original stores in Leicester, it's a shame to see the state the company is in now.

When it was a family owned concern and still focused on customer service it was a great company. The old Jessops price list was famous - an A1 size sheet listing every camera, lens and accessory you could think off - even though you needed a magnifying glass to read it LOL

and always found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable. Jessops had what I wanted when other camera shops didn't, or they would quickly get it from another branch. Their attitude defined the phrase 'customer service', and I'm sorry to see that things aren't going to well for them. I suppose that like many others I've contributed to the situation by shopping online.

I've been a customer for as long as I can remember, but their in store prices (and their web prices) are somewhat more expensive than the likes of Warehouse Express. I was recently sourcing what was to be a major purchase of nearly £4000, and Jessops were never in the hunt, due entirely to their prices.

It's a shame, but they do need to become more competitive.

I've recommended many colleagues, friends and family to go into Jessops for advice then look online however frequently my advice was that Jessops would price match.

They stopped doing this, however they do seem to do it on cameras now but not anything else.

They were doing very well if I recall correctly until around the time they stopped price matching just about anything!

I value them for their advice and convenience. I don't want to spend 700+ on a digital SLR from a website, I'd rather speak to someone who knows what they are talking about. However I suspect the majority of shoppers are looking for a cheap point and shoot, don't need much advice (realistically any reasonable 5+ MP digital compact is going to suit most people these days - so who needs advice?) and so buy online.
