I am buying a new computer and would appreciate advice on whether to go for an: -
AMD Athlon 64x2 4600+ - socket AM2
Intel Pentium D950 Dual Core (3.4 GHz, 2mb cache, 800 MHz)
Computer used for games, digital photography etc.

The new Intel Conroe is due out at end of month if you can hold out till then

I would wait for Conroe also. At a intel conference, some techs demonstrated and the 2.6Ghz conroe performed excellent compared to a 3.8Ghz Pentium 4 HT

Thanks for the advice on the Conroe, but would you rather go with the IP than the AMD?

Partly from personal preference, and mainly because the net burst architecture of pentiums is just totally dire - very inefficient.

Having said that socket AM2 is quite expensive, i.e. expensive RAM and expensive motherboards for very little improvement. A cheaper more efficent route would to go socket 939...

But I would definitely wait for the conroe... mainly because the CPU looks like it will be almost twice as fast as anything AMD can produce, as well as more efficient with a lower TDP, but also because the price of all the other CPUs may well plummet. This month is a bad time to buy a new PC.

Thanks all. Will take your advice and await the impact of the Conroe.
