i came across this pc at click here
looks great but is it a good value please - jarani

that this machine will have a limited upgrade potential and that it's unbranded, it looks fine.

You may be able to add more RAM, you may not - there's no way of telling - but a year down the line you'll probably want to do that. I would want to do it straight away, particularly if I took the Vista upgrade route.

I would also be looking for a larger hard drive on what is essentially a multi-media computer.

I have no personal knowledge of the supplier, so I can't comment on the customer service aspect of things, but that's something else you should investigate.

FE - most grateful for your comments

The supplier falls into a slightly upmarket Aldi / Lidl German non grocer category with a similar marketing approach

The use would be for a granddaughter at a boarding school

I have not come up against such a versatile all in portable pc before - regards - jarani

Fot that money you can get a new 17inch laptop. That means it comes with a battery and doesnt need the mains all the time. Personally I would agree with the forum editor in that the PC while good spec for now isnt great value for money when compared to

Cheaper and also better specifications. 20gb more hard drive, better processor, similar graphics. It being an acer means it is well known brand wise and reliable. Also the company selling it plenty of people here have purchased from including me.

On the face of it that PC looks to be good value but there are laptops out there that are better.

i take the points made by the FE and will delve deeper into the unknowns

what attracts me to this machine are the all-in-one facilities = pc + TV + cd/dvd player + HD recorder + webcam = if they all work - for the way it would be used sounds a good idea - jarani

That is the full tech spec of the acer laptop.

pc - It is a PC
TV - Has a multiformat TV tuner card
cd/dvd player - has a bigger screen and does the CD/DVD playback thing
HD recorder - Do you mean dual layer DVD drive. Pretty well everything these days has one
webcam - 1.3 Megapixel on the acer compared to what seems to be a .3megapixel one on this all in one machine. Yes it may be a bit unusual but does it really make sense to have a PC with limited ability where looks are what you are paying for over pure power.

The other thing to consider is that the laptop will be less likely to overheat as acer and other laptop makes have been using tried and tested methods of getting rid of excess heat. Personally I would bring it down to the money factor and the acer is better value for money, cheaper, a much larger brand and most of all the £70 saved could be used to buy a case for it.

CoftheN - HD recorder is a Hard Drive TV recorder - the only thing it has not got is a Digital TV - it seems to have most of what we need today in one piece of equipment for the use described - jarani

because it has a DVB-T it can function as that too.
