The Aldi Gericom Laptop previously selling at £999.99 is included with their Sale which starts on Monday 27th Dec. The price is £799.99.

If it was a bargain at £999 it surely must be a steal at £799.

Other items in the sale include a 27" LCD Widescreen TV @ £599 and a 15" LCD Monitor @£129.

...I bought one at full price back in September and ended up getting a refund. It turned out to be faulty, kept cutting out after boot up. My experience with Gericom Tech Support was not very impressive so I decided against a replacement.

I know it could just have been my bad luck but I found that I wasn't the only one to have problems.

Allegedly, Aldi can't shift these, they have had 2 goes at selling them this year already.

If you decide to go for it, just be aware that the "All Risk Insurance" has a large excess that could come as a shock if you need to make a claim.

Buy it for parts and price accordingly.

The PC they released on November 25 - MD8383 - has so many performance and support problems that the net is awash with complaint forums. Google MD8383 and you'll see.

Medion isn't a manufacturer - it merely rebrands other specialist manufacturers' profits under its own name and sells them across Europe and the States through outlets such as Aldi and, on occasion, PC World.

but this isn't a Medion, it's manufactured by Gericom?

I bought a Gericom laptop in March from Aldi, no problems yet, except when i upgraded to XP pro from Home and setup partitions but. I'm very interested in the one for sale now, I'll have to give it a look, if any are left.

The Aldi laptop is produced by MSI in Taiwan, the 510 series, probably the 510C. It has a very good specification and comes with a lot of software (some of it useable, eg Works Suite 2004 and video software), an 80 GByte hard disk, Ati Mobility 9700 128 MByte and 1400x1050 screen. There's also a carry-bag in the box. With a 2-year warranty it is good value. I've upgraded to SP2 Pro and partitioned it usably and it works well. It's fast enough for games. Haven't tested battery life yet, ut the M735 processor should give a fair time, if not necessarily as long as advertised.

Aldi don't take credit cards, so make sure you load your debit card account.

If I have any problems, I'll report back
