Are you using Safari web browser possibly? It could be emulating a mac computer to the Microsoft servers.

using IE7.

Found a workaround went to office updates had it scan the laptop for office updates then used a link from their to windows updates where updates downloaded and installed ok. After reqd reboot tried windows update as normal still getting the same error relating to a mac.

any ideas for a proper fix please.

I would also try to re-set IE7 see if that makes any difference.

Click tools--internet options-- advanced tab--then the reset tab.

followed all the options re norton on yourlink to microsoft, none worked.

reset IE7 as you suggested and it cured the problem thanks for all the help.

Good it worked. Now I'd go to tools-manage add-ons- enable-disable add-ons and enable a few at a time in case it was one of these that caused the fault.
