services.exe on XP SP3 machine

we are having a massive problem which is affecting the installation (and removal) of software. When something new is attepted to be installed it hangs half-way through and I have tracked it down to services.exe which runs at about 99% CPU (with very little memory). This file IS a windows file (april 2008)and definately NOT a virus (Kasperski verified).
Q. I am wondering if services.exe got screwed on either SP2 or SP3 installation. Can this be fixed or is the only option to do either a repair install or a clean install? The machine itself is about 3 years old.
It is driving us crackers!

You could try checking out Services configuration from Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, using the Black Viper website as a guide. See:

Another suggestion is to type:

sfc /scannow (note the space)

into the Run box and OK.

You may need your installation disk handy.

One more is ChkDsk.
