Mail problem following power outage

Following a local power outage, I restarted my iMac but found that when I clicked on Mail, instead of opening my mail boxes it opened up an avalanche of old messages sent years ago, at a rate of at least one per second, and I was able even to access the Mail Preferences menu or any other menu. Any suggests to get out of this dilemma would be welcome. (I can still receive messages by webmail, of course). Thanks.

I think your best bet is to delete the account and set it up again in Mail.

Open Mail and go to accounts, delete and just start from scratch. It might take a while to sort itself out, but it should work fine afterwards. You could alway archive or delete some of the old stuff in your webmail first if you want to save time.
