Couldn't find a full explanation, but I get the impression that MAC has replaced CBUK. So am now puzzled as to why some ISPs ask for CBUK for migration

I wouldn't worry about it - if you ever want to change ISP's just ask your old ISP for your MAC code, which they are obliged to provide you with within five days - usually quicker than this though.
Once you have your MAC code make sure you process it on to your new ISP well within thirty days, otherwise it will expire and you will have to get another one.
