Have a friend's badly infected eMachine 3038 with no manual or disks & would like to be able to scan in safe mode but the usual F8 key fails to work. At boot up you are offered F2 for Bios & F10 for one of Repair, Reinstall or Restore none of which I want at the moment.
Anyone know how to start in safe mode ?

You could try Del but that used to be bios

Try F5.

eMachines are nearly always F8 - but you need to tap the key repeatedly to get it to work

Have tried Del but will give F5 a try after Avast has finished its Boot scan which has taken hours !!!.....at least it has unearthed the infected restore files
Thanks for your help

Sorry for the delay.....the Boot scan took four hours !!
After all that I had no joy with Del, F8 or F5
So for anyone interested ( maybe for any PC ?)I tried the back door
Start...Run..type msconfig
System Config Utility opens
Boot.ini tab....check the box....Safe boot
Apply.....OK
Restart....bingo....you're in safe mode
After running virus, malware etc checks you have to go back to the Boot.ini and uncheck the 'safe boot' then restart in normal mode
Hope you find this useful...thanks evryone

That is a useful tip for future reference

It's ok for XP. Read somewhere that on some models had the ability of hitting a key on boot-up, to enter safe mode, was removed for some reason.
