Emachine 5250 Memory Problem

  RLMTS 12:46 16 Nov 2007

I have an Emachine 5250 with 512MB of memory and have just purchased a memory upgrade from Crucial after using their "Memory Advisor Tool"

I purchased 2 x 512MB to make 1.5GB (one of the 'Advisor' options)

When I opened the case there were 2 double banks of memory slots with a 256K unit in each bank.

I added a 512MB to each bank (ie Bank 1 = 256 & 512. Bank 2 = 256 & 512)

When I powered back up the fans started but nothing else (no beeps!) the monitor reported 'no video signal'

I powered down to inspect what I had done, I think I may have dislodged one of the old 256 rams as it seemed to 'click' when I pressed it down (but not sure of this)

So I ensured the 256's were located ok and removed the new 512's.

Anyway, when I powered it up again it 'booted' but went straight to "Auto Configuration.... " or something like that?! I could not interrupt this.

The Hard drive has been whirring away with drive LED flickering for at least 45 mins now?
And as I type this (on another pc obviously! lol>) the whirring has virtually stopped, just the odd click and LED flash?

It's been showing the 'desktop' all the while, but with only a few icons?

Does anyone know what might be going on here?

Thanks in anticipation! Richard
PS the memory recommended and purchased from Crucial was CT6464Z40B.16TGY (x2)

Well, it finally gave me back control, (after an hour) all seems well. (but not sure what went on there!)

My Computer 'properties' is showing 504MB memory not 512 (something to do with 8MB aside for video card maybe?)

Before I attempt to add my 2 x 512MBs back in, should they be installed in a special way.. physically?

What I mean is... which slots of the 2 banks should they be installed in, bearing in mind I have a total of 2x256MB and 2x512MB

Regards Rich

By the way, not sure if it's relevant...

Emachines 5250
XP Home SP2
Pentium 4 CPU
2.93 GHZ

Aren't you supposed to have the banks balanced as far as possible ie. 1 bank of 512x2 and one of 256x2.
Why mix them up as you've done?

  RLMTS 14:50 16 Nov 2007

Well.. I didn't really mix them, there was already 1 256MB in one bank and a another 256MB in the other... so I just filled the 2 spare slots? (i spare slot in each bank)
Is this incorrect then?

Try putting the 2 x 512 sticks in one bank and the 2 x 250 sticks in the other.

  RLMTS 15:10 16 Nov 2007

No matter what combination I try now I am getting <beep> <beep> <beep>

Unless I simply put the 2 256MBs back in
(one in each bank, as originally supplied))

Try putting the two 512Mb modules in dimm 0 slots. click here

do a bios reset

unplug computer at mains

insert both 512 sticks

on the motherboard their will be a bios jumper

if you cant find it dont worry
just remove the battery for 20 seconds

place bettery back in
plug system back in

if succesful you will get the press f1 to continue screeen

report back if this has worked

Thanks Paul, thanks Umbongo.

Paul, I still get 3 beeps.

Umbongo, am I likely to loose anything else if I do a reset?

Also, I have been back on the Crucial website, and the mem recommended by their 'advisor software' is different to the mem recommended when you do it manually by typing in Emachines 5250 !?

The 'Advisor' recommends CT6464Z40B
DDR PC3200 CL=3 Unbuff NON-ECC DDR400 2.6v 64Mx64

The 5250 result recommends CT559664
DDR PC3200 CL=3 Unbuff NON-ECC DDR400 2.6v 64Mx64

Appears to be same spec but different part numbers?

Perhaps I had better ring Crucial on Monday.

ATB Rich.

Smaller memory should go in first bank normally, then the two 512 in second.

PS you motheboard may only support the two sots at any one time. you need to check Comp Manual Config
