Dell Desktop Machine

A rather generic title I know, but unfortunately I don't know the exact model.

My Dads machine won't start up at all, it is completely dead. The four lights on the rear of the main box do not light up, and the manual supplied by Dell describes this error as the normal off condition or a pre-bios error.

What I am trying to establish is what the problem is. I wondered if the power supply had packed in as it doesn't even seem to power up. What is the best way to get this repaired?

thanks for your help

Check from the mains socket inwards - including the mains socket itself (plug something else in and see if it works). Then the power lead to the computer (swap out if you have a spare). Only then suspect the power supply unit in the computer - it's usually a case of either buying a new unit and hoping it fixes the problem, or returning to your dealer for testing and fix.

As PA28 says,
First thing to do is check the fuse in the wallplug.
- and daft as it sounds - check the wall socket is switched on. (especially if any children have been near it ! I had this problem recently and it was grandchild that had switched the socket off!)
