App for editing antique photos

Does anyone out there know of an app that enhances and edits old damaged photos - I know about Adobe but need something less pricey! Thanks

Good free alternatives to Adobe are Paint.net and G.I.M.P. (GNU Image Manipulation Program).

Both of these are fully featured image editors that are open source and free to download and use.

There is a learning curve (as there is with Adobe) but each has fairly good documentation and helpful forums where any specific issues can be discussed.
