Only 15% women participate in Singapore IT industry, according to a report by technology recruitment consultancy Greythorn.
A February 2014 survey of over 140 senior level females working in the IT industry shows that half of the women who make a career in IT find a gender gap in salary.
A perception that women will leave to go on maternity is one of the main reasons given by those surveyed for this report. Other reasons include perceptions that men do a better job and women can't work as long hours due to family commitments.
This gender gap in salary also exists as men bargain harder and are less afraid/are more assertive when asking for higher salaries.
As many senior roles are male, respondents agreed to an unconscious bias towards their own gender.
Lesser gap for younger generation
Only 30% of women who have been in the IT industry for less than 5 years said there is gender inequality in pay.
In contrast, 68% of senior IT professionals believe there is a gender gap when it comes to salary.
Singapore ranks 58th in the world when it comes to gender equality, according to a 2013 report by the World Economic Forum. The country has slipped in ranking as it held the 55th position in 2012.
The 2013 report ranks Thailand at the 65th place, Vietnam at 71st, Indonesia at 95th and Malaysia at the 102nd position.
"The technology sector is growing rapidly in Asia and the battle for talent is becoming fierce, regardless of gender," said Dung Nguyen, managing consultant at Greythorn. "Closing the gender gap in pay will be key to attracting females, with 63% of women surveyed believing that equal pay is essential to motivating women to remain in IT. Organizations looking to achieve gender diversity should consider implementing an equal and transparent remuneration policy."
