Following last month's news that London is the top Twitter city in the world, the city's social networking reputation gets ever higher with further top-of-the-city-charts on Digg and Facebook.

In August Twitter chief executive Evan Williams said that use of the social networking site had "exploded" in the UK with London being the top Twitter-using city. The UK is second to the US in Twitter use in terms of user numbers.

A Digg spokesman now confirms that "Nearly 10 per cent of traffic to Digg is from London and the UK is our second largest country next to the US."

The Telegraph now reports Facebook confirmation that London is also the Facebook geographical network with the largest number of members.

Robin Hamman, head of social media at social business consultancy Headshift and visiting journalism fellow at City University, told the newspaper that he wasn't surprised by London's love affair with social networks:

"Londoners are well known for maintaining a polite distance in their dealings with each other. Whilst this makes it easier to navigate a city of 7.5 million - imagine having to say hello and making chit-chat with everyone you encounter on the tube - it's also somewhat dehumanising.

"It gives them the opportunity to do what people in smaller cities and towns often take for granted - have random conversations with strangers without worrying too much about overstepping personal boundaries."

"London has a comparatively young, affluent and office-based workforce with high levels of internet connectivity. That, combined with its status as a global communications, business and social hub, means that its population is more likely than those of similar sized cities to participate in social networking activities."
