The OpenStack Foundation kicked off the four-day OpenStack Summit 2013 on Tuesday at the Asia World Expo in Hong Kong, expecting a crowd of 3,000 to show up. The global event--now in its third year--is held outside the US for the first time.
Jonathan Bryce, executive director of OpenStack Foundation, told Computerworld Hong Kong that the city was picked because of the support from Cyberport and Internet Society Hong Kong.
"They are actually the reason we came here," he said. "They created a proposal that makes a lot of sense as we mulled over the summit location."
With growing participation from the international community, Bryce said that the Hong Kong summit helps draw participants from Asia. Among the 3,000 registered participants, 45% of them are from Asia, a tremendous increase from 6% at the last summit in April, he said. In addition, two-third of the participants joins the summit for the first time.
A growing community that has created 1.7 million lines of codes
A non-profit organization to promote the development and deployment of OpenStack cloud, the OpenStack Foundation now has 24 company members, 48 sponsors, 197 supporters, and 12,306 individual members. A couple of days before the summit, three companies -- Aptira, Hitachi and Huawei -- have become Gold Members and support the use of OpenStack in their products, Bryce noted.
According to him, most of the organizations' members come from Australia, China, India, UK, and the US -- these are also geographies that lead in code development and deployment.
Bryce revealed that the OpenStack community has contributed 1.7 million lines of codes to date, compared to only 10,000 lines of codes three years ago. "With an average of 375 contributors on a monthly basis, we able to release new software every six months," he said.
User and deployment
At a keynote session, Bryce said that the three key components of the OpenStack cloud platform are: 1) OpenStack Software; 2) tools, services and software; and 3) private clouds and public clouds.
The main capabilities of OpenStack include compute, object storage, block storage, networking, dashboard, and cross-project services, he added.
As expected, IT is the industry where OpenStack is deployed the most to date, followed by academics and education and telecommunications.
The top 10 applications and workloads deployed on OpenStack are: web services, QA test environment, databases, research, continuous integration/automated testing, storage and backup, virtual desktops, data mining/ big data/ Hadoop, management & monitoring systems, and HPC, he said.
On-premise private cloud has the biggest share of OpenStack deployment today at 60%, followed by hosted private cloud (17%), public cloud (15%), hybrid cloud (6%), and community cloud (2%).
The PayPal experience
Paypal as an OpenStack user shares its case during the event.
While OpenStack runs thousands of virtual machines to support PayPal's self-service developer model, PayPal's internal team manages deployment and operations, using OpenStack Compute, storage and shared services, according to the company.
"We needed agility without sacrificing availability. By leveraging the collective innovation of the OpenStack community, we can develop and grow our private cloud much quicker without having to reinvent anything," said Saran Mandair, senior director of infrastructure engineering at PayPal.
With a lean team of four people, PayPal's manager of cloud infrastructure Jonathan Pickard, noted the OpenStack platform has been critical for the company to deal with peak holiday transactions. The firm processed more than US$26,000 in mobile payments every minute in 2012.
In 2014, the OpenStack Foundation will primarily focus on product certification, said Bryce. The organization will also aim to provide individual training, education and certification on OpenStack while building an ecosystem with the introduction of an ambassador program and intellectual property programs.
