More than 100 million mobile phone owners browser the web from their handset using Opera.

According to Opera's 'State of the mobile web' report 90.4 million handset owners use Opera Mini, while 15 million worldwide use Opera Mobile.

Opera said its Mini browser has gained 5.6 percent more users since December last year.

In January 2011, the Opera Mini browser had over 90.3 million users, a 5.6% increase from December and page views have risen by 12.1 percent to 52.3 billion in the same period. Furthermore, in January 2011, Opera Mini users consumed 804m Mb of data, which is 13.8 percent up on the data used in December.

"Experts all have some date when they claim the mobile Web will overtake the PC web — we're watching that transition now," said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder of Opera Software.

"But, rather than think of numbers, we think of people. 100 million is the beginning of a new era for the web. In the next few years, hundreds of millions of people will take their first baby steps online."

The browser developer also revealed it will unveil new versions of its of the Opera Mini browser for Android, iPhone, J2ME, BlackBerry, Symbian the iPad at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which takes place next week.

"Our developers have been hard at work building the mobile browser of the future - for both consumers and mobile operators," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software.
