Apple's iPhone has become the most popular device for accessing news and information on the mobile web, according to M:Metrics, with 85 percent of iPhone users accessing such content in January. This compares to 58.2 per cent of other smartphone users and 13.1 per cent of the market average.

M:Metrics senior analyst Mark Donovan said: "The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype. Beyond a doubt, this device is compelling consumers to interact with the mobile web, delivering off-the-charts usage from everything to text messaging to mobile video."

It's not just news and weather: iPhone users are accessing more mobile TV and video, social-networking websites, and music than users on any other mobile platform.

For mobile TV and video, 30.9 percent of iPhone users watched mobile TV or video as compared to the 4.6 percent market average, or 14.2 percent usage of other smartphones.

Social-networking sites are seeing iPhone activity, also, M:Metrics claims 49.7 percent of users accessed such sites in January, twelve times the market average of other smartphone users.

Three in four (74.1 percent) of iPhone users listened to music in January - this compares to a paltry 6.7 percent of the total mobile phone market and 27.9 per cent of smartphone users. 30.4 percent of iPhone users accessed YouTube and 36 percent used Google Maps; this compares to just one percent of all mobile subscribers who accessed YouTube and 2.6 percent using Google Maps.

The research firm also confirmed that iPhone users tend to be male, aged 25-34, earn over $100,000 and have a college degree.

"The key message is that iPhone is more than living up to its claims of being a user friendly internet browser, unlike many other mobile phones," said Aodhan Cullen, founder and CEO of StatCounter. He said that iPhone web browsing peaked in the US on Christmas Day at 0.07 per cent. "Presumably this was due to people trying out their new Christmas present combined perhaps with not accessing their computers that day," he added.
