Akamai partners will now be able to more easily architect services following today's launch of the Open Platform initiative.
The initiative is a set of programs and components intended to create more opportunities for community collaboration and to provide deeper visibility and greater control of how enterprises interact with Akamai technology.
It is aimed at helping users to get the most out of their investment in the Akamai Intelligent Platform and includes deeper integration into existing processes, real-time big data integration and a single-point user interface.
One core element of the initiative leverages Application Programming Interface (API) expert Apiary to expose the platform's APIs to developers, customers and partners.
It grants simplified access to Akamai's platform for better and easier integration with home-grown as well as third party technologies and applications. Apiary chief executive Jakub NeaetYil said the developer experience was the single most important success factor when it came to APIs.
"We built the company to make designing great APIs easy," he said. "Partnering with Akamai on Open will significantly extend our reach with this community, and more broadly facilitate a larger ecosystem for innovation."
It is also intended to make it easier to combine solutions with services from organisations such as next-generation machine data analytics firm Sumo Logic.
Sumo Logic chief executive Vance Loiselle said it presented an opportunity for companies to exploit the Cloud.
"Our machine data analytics platform can now marry rich Akamai logs with enterprise application context to provide real-time insights about customer experience, site performance and security posture." Akamai president, products, Rick McConnell said offering partners the right technology and the freedom to use it in compelling ways was the foundation of the platform. "The ability to use the power of the Akamai Intelligent Platform enables developers to take advantage of emerging Internet opportunities and create innovative web experiences optimised for their customers."
