Is an upgraded Nintendo DS handheld console on its way?

Rumours have been spreading around the industry that Nintendo is ready to release an upgraded version of its DS handheld as soon as sales of the existing DS Lite fall off. In an apparent attempt to quash the rumours this week, the gaming giant managed to produce the opposite effect. So when will the DS get a makeover?

Analyst Evan Wilson reported a couple of days ago that "according to his contacts", Nintendo had actually completed work on its refreshed DS.

"It's thinner (it has no GBA port) and has on-board storage and larger screens," Wilson said.

"However, we do not expect a revamped Wii or DS until sales begin to tail off in all three major geographies."

Nintendo America exec George Harrison stepped in with a prompt 'nay', but many observers were left feeling that the company representative doth protest too much. There are no "imminent" plans, he said. Interesting word, that, imminent. Why's that, Mr Harrison? "The product is still selling extremely well around the world." Hmmm.

"I'm not sure what his source was for [the rumour], but it's not something you’re going to hear about anytime soon," Harrison added.

Well, that's me convinced.
