The Star Wars Kid has been named as the internet’s most popular viral video by marketing firm The Viral Factory.

According to the study, Ghyslain Raza, whose video recording of himself wielding a light sabre was uploaded to the internet without his knowledge by fellow students, has been viewed 900m times. It’s comfortably the most-viewed clip on the web, with the second most popular – known as Numa Numa – achieving 700m views.

But web users aren’t only interested in American teenagers making fools of themselves - also making the top ten is Paris Hilton's sex tape One Night in Paris, a TV news clip from 1970 of an exploding whale and a video clip of a fisherman fighting with a bear.

The survey was commissioned to promote a UKTV G2 programme called Totally Viral, which celebrates viral videos and makes its debut on UK screens tonight.

According to its website "Totally Viral takes the most creative and comedic elements of the worldwide web and pours them straight into the telly”.
