LinkedIn wants to be more than just a professional networking site you only check when you need to update your job title or confirm a request to connect. That's why the company keeps adding new features, like integrating Pulse's newsreader last year and launching its Influencer blog series. On Monday, LinkedIn bought Newsle to become the Google Alert for your professional life.
Newsle crawls the Web to find the names of your Facebook and LinkedIn contacts. It sifts only through news articles and blog posts, not social media mentions, and delivers results to your inbox seconds after pages are posted online. The 3-year-old company will continue to operate a stand-alone service while it integrates with LinkedIn, Newsle founders Jonah Varon and Axel Hansen said in a Monday blog post.
The two companies didn't say if Newsle will do for LinkedIn what it used to do on its own, or whether the service will evolve, but LinkedIn did spell out exactly why it wanted Newsle:
"LinkedIn and Newsle share a common goal: We both want to provide professional insights that make you better at what you do," said Ryan Roslansky, LinkedIn's head of content products, in Monday's announcement. "For example, knowing more about the people in your network--like when they're mentioned in the news--can surface relevant insights that help you hit your next meeting with them out of the park."
Newsle also brings 2 million users to the table, though with its acquisition, it will now have a much bigger audience: LinkedIn's more than 300 million users.
