Eight out of 10 social networkers would be more careful with the information they post online if they knew it would later end up in the mainstream media, reports the Press Complaints Commission (PCC).

According to research that was conducted by Ipsos-Mori on behalf of the PCC, 55 percent of 16-24 year old thought carefully ABOUT whether personal information such as photographs and personal details posted on sites such as Facebook and MySpace might later be used by other people without their consent.

The survey also highlighted that 49 percent of those surveyed believed it was wrong for mainstream media such as newspapers, magazines and broadcasters to use online personal information without first checking with the person concerned.

And when it comes to regulating media use of personal information on the web, 89 percent agreed there should be clear guidelines regarding the type of personal information that could be used.
