Schneider Electric is sponsoring Hong Kong Polytechnic University's new Intelligent Building Laboratory (IB Lab) in the Department of Building Service Engineering, recently opened in the new green building Block Z, announced the energy management specialist.

The new IB Lab, featuring Schneider Electric integrated building management systems, will facilitate effective teaching and learning of smart grid and building management systems, helping groom local professionals to address the need for talent in the building energy management sector.

The sponsorship of PolyU's new IB Lab marks a significant contribution by Schneider Electric toward nurturing energy management talent in Hong Kong, the company said in a statement.

"Energy is the biggest challenge for our generation and those yet to come - cities cover only 2% of the Earth's surface, but account for 75% of its energy consumption and 80% of its carbon emissions," said Eric Xie, President of Schneider Electric Hong Kong. "In Hong Kong, nearly 90% of total electricity consumption is attributable to buildings, and with the enactment of the Building Energy Efficiency Ordinance in 2012, energy management has become a critical component in developing intelligent buildings. By collaborating with PolyU, Schneider Electric is educating local energy management professionals about intelligent buildings and smart grids, aiming to help fill the need for talent in the building sector to drive a greener city."

I believe the new Intelligent Building Laboratory will provide valuable support in developing more intelligent and innovative building solutions for sustainable development."
