Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades

Sony has announced its upgrade plans for Xperia owners detailing which smartphones and tablets will get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and 4.4 KitKat.

Android is now up to version 4.4 KitKat with the launch of Nexus 5 smartphone. That makes all the devices of 4.2 Jelly Bean seem pretty out of date. Luckily Sony has set out its roadmap for Xperia software updates. See also: Nexus 5: Where to buy.

"We’ve seen lots of questions on our Android upgrade roadmap and equally, we have lots to tell you, so here’s a note on just that…" Sony said in a blog.

Sony has confirmed that it will start rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to its Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 next month.

The Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V which are all on an older version of Android will jump straight to 4.3 so that's great news if you've got an older handset.

A Jelly Bean upgrade is good but you probably want the latest and greatest software so here's the deal with Android 4.4 KitKat. The first raft of devices to be given the bump to the chocolate themed OS will be the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1.

Sony hasn't announced when the KitKat rollout will take place though, so we'll let you know when we hear any more on the situation.

As with any software upgrade, timing will depend on what country you're in and possibly what mobile operator you have. The software will be rolled out in phases.
