Classic strategy-action game Syndicate is a favorite of many retro gamers. Now, The Darkness developer Starbreeze is working on a reimagining.

Insider sources speaking with 1up have unofficially confirmed that "Project RedLime," a secret project at The Darkness developer Starbreeze, is a new entry in EA's Syndicate series. The new game will blend the Blade Runner-esque Syndicate universe with first-person gameplay and a focus on multiplayer -- concentrating on a core mechanic rather than narrative or technology, according to the studio.

The new Syndicate title has had a difficult development process, according to the sources. Starbreeze has had a high turnover of staff, and tech issues and creative differences among team members have also caused difficulties.

One source remarked to 1up that EA sending producers in to embed with the team was a "really bad sign" that Starbreeze had been doing "something very, very wrong for a very long time with Syndicate." Another noted that "EA wasn't the ideal development partner in the early days. [Syndicate] has been rebooted more times than I can count."

Project RedLime hasn't been officially confirmed as a new Syndicate game, but rumors have been circulating for some time now. Original developer Peter Molyneux even noted in conversation with CVG that he would be happy to offer EA 24 hours of his time to consult on a new entry in the franchise.

"They're smart people and I'm sure they'll work it out," he said. "But it's like a parent watching their kid grow up and do something with their life -- you still want to be a little bit involved."
