What is the PS Vita, why the PS Vita is set to be around for a good while yet, and why there will be a new PS Vita in 2015. Also: why we won't ever see a PS Vita 2. (See also: PS4 vs Xbox One review.)
Recently we've been asked a couple of times whether we think there will be a PS Vita in 2015 - or if there will ever be a PS Vita 2. In some ways it is a tough question to answer: there is literally no information in the public domain that even hints at a PS Vita 2. But that also makes it easy, and I will say it up front: I'd be surprised if there is ever a PS Vita 2. But that doesn't mean there won't be a new PS Vita this year. And it certainly doesn't mean the Vita is on the slide. Far from it. In this article I explain what is the PS Vita, why the PS Vita is set to be around for a good while yet, and why there may well be a new PS Vita in 2015. But I also opine that we won't ever see a PS Vita 2.

Playstation Vita 2 rumours: what is PS Vita?
For the uninitiated, the PS Vita is a handheld games console. It is the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) as the portable arm of the PlayStation lineup of games consoles. The PS Vita has been available globally since early 2012, and is in competition with with the Nintendo 3DS. Together those two devices are considered eighth generation portable games consoles. Playstation Vita 2 rumours: the Vita isn't going away any time soon
The whole idea of a portable games consoles seems kind of weird in 2015. We all carry at least one portable gaming device, often an internet connected one with a powerful GPU, onboard storage and an HD display - it's called a smartphone. (See also: What's the fastest smartphone 2015 UK?)
But despite the innate quirkiness of an additional device just for games, portable consoles are successful. Indeed, Nintendo's 3DS was updated late last year, and continues to do good business (find out more in our new Nintendo 3DS & 3DS XL review). And even the dear old PS Vita remains relatively popular considering that Sony never really markets it, and that essential weirdness of it not being a smartphone or even a tablet.
Meanwhile PSP games are still being released, and an all-new, slim PS Vita launched only last year.
The success of the Vita is largely based on the games. You can expect the PS Vita games ecosystem to remain vibrant for at least the next five years. Right now there are a *lot* of Vita games coming down the pipe. Indie, interesting, cool games: there are more announced Vita games than than there are for any platform other than PC.
So the PS Vita isn't going away any time soon. But that doesn't mean that Sony is about to launch a PS Vita 2. In fact, that is unlikely ever to happen (although with a company as crazy as Sony you never say never).
Playstation Vita 2 rumours: will there be a PS Vita 2?
Is Sony crazy enough to do another Vita? Yes. But not the 'Vita 2'. Expect in 2015 something similar to the 2014 Vita update. Sony will likely launch a Vita that is cheaper, potentially by removing the not required back touchscreen. Expect to see more internal storage, in a physically slimmer device.
As the PS4 drops in price expect to see a new cut-price Vita bundled with its big brother console. And over time it is possible that the lines between Remote Play, the PS4 controller and the PS Vita will become more blurred.
Sony will likely release another handheld Vita console, but it is unlikely it will be a new 'Vita 2'. (See also: PS4 vs Xbox One review.)
