Since it's unlikely that we'll see another Elite Beat Agents game any time soon, fans of handheld music games have had to look elsewhere for their rhythmic tapping action for some time. It looks like we may be seeing something of a resurgence in the genre, however, what with last week's excellent Groove Coaster and now the sort-of free Osu!Stream.

Osu!Stream takes the basic gameplay mechanics of Elite Beat Agents (also known as Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! in Japan) and adds a couple of extra mechanics: multitouch beats that require you to tap them at exactly the same time; beats that require you to hold them down (often while tapping other beats); and a dynamic difficulty level -- the titular "stream" system.

Osu!Stream sadly doesn't feature the ridiculous and oddly touching comic book adventures of the Elite Beat Agents, instead taking a more businesslike approach and allowing the player to focus entirely on the music. You probably won't recognize the music, either -- but that's no bad thing, as the included tracks are certainly good fun to tap along to.

The game is free to download and comes with two songs. Two further songs are available for free download, and two packs of additional songs are available for $2.99 each. Developer Dean "Peppyhax" Herbert says the game will be regularly updated with further free and paid content, and is also taking user feedback into account when developing updates.

Grab the game from the App Store here.
