CPI annual inflation - the Government's target measure - was 1.5 percent in October, up from 1.1 per cent in September, today's consumer price indices from the Office for National Statistics show.

While the largest upward pressure affecting the change in inflation came from transport, there were further large upward pressures from the Recreation and Culture sector - including hobbies, where the largest upward effect came from computer games.

Within recording media the largest upward contribution came from DVDs.

Another sector forcing up inflation is Communication, where prices rose between September and October this year by more than a year ago, mainly due to increases in landline telephone charges.

As an internationally comparable measure of inflation, the CPI shows that the UK inflation rate in September, at 1.1 per cent, was above the provisional figure for the European Union as a whole of 0.3 per cent.
