Selling mobile games at retail may seem somewhat self-defeating, given that it's rather easier to fire up your phone's relevant app acquisition marketplace and press "Buy" rather than walk into a shop, find what you're looking for, pay for it then enter a redemption code. However, at this time, unlike Apple's App Store, purchasing specific apps as a gift via the Android Market or the Amazon Appstore is not possible, though you can redeem Amazon Gift Cards against Appstore purchases.

indiePub is hoping to change that situation with the introduction of its "Android All-Stars" retail cards. Each will sell in a variety of locations across the U.S. and Canada including Target, Toys 'R' Us, Sam's Club, Rogers Mobile and various others. They'll cost $10 each, and will feature a code that instantly activates selections of Android games for download on compatible devices.

Three cards are currently scheduled to launch in time for the holiday season. Android All-Stars: Volume 1 will include Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Sally's Spa and several others. Volume 2 will feature Kona's Crate, Guerilla Bob, Free Kicks Soccer, Backbreaker Football and others. The third is a special Atari card featuring over 100 classic Atari games. Each card will include "at least" ten games from major publishers, making them potentially a good deal, and a nice gift for someone who's just got a shiny new Android phone or tablet.

"The Android All-Stars program has significant benefits for the traditional brick and mortar retail business by providing a channel into the rapidly expanding digital application delivery market," said indiePub CEO Mark Seremet. "The Android All-Stars cards also tap into a small fraction of the new indiePub technology that will soon be unveiled with the launch of the new indiePub site. Android publishing partners benefit by having their great games pulled from the clutter of the hundreds of thousands of apps in the Android Marketplace to then be placed in front of significant consumer retail traffic."
