Engineering simulation provider CD-adapco has enhanced its high performance computing (HPC) environment with Dell systems.

The blade server and networking system chosen avoids the need for CD-adapco to "rip and replace" its existing system investments and increase processing power.

CD-adapco works with intelligent physics simulations to help streamline design and computational modelling in industries including the automotive, aerospace and shipping segments.

To support these complex models CD-adapco has tripled its existing implementation of Dell PowerEdge M610 blade servers. This cluster now allows CD-adapco's 350 engineers to run multiple computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications simultaneously, allowing for a three-fold increase in the number of jobs they can process at any given time, or allowing single jobs to be run at a much higher speed.

The CFD software allows customers to simulate processes involving the flow of fluids or solids, such as wind, heat transfer and pressure, to ensure that designs are as robust as possible. For example, the software can demonstrate how much downforce a car will experience running in an F1 racing environment

The business can analyse this kind of data across one to two million design parts, allowing for accurate predictions to be made around design strengths and flaws.

The tripling of processing power improves turnaround times for customers and reduces costs, said CD-adapco. "We have invested heavily in clusters to provide this compute power. The blade systems from Dell mean we can have a model that scales from small to large offices and then grows as we need it to," said Philip Morris Jones, director at CD-adapco.

Last month Nuffield Health said it was migrating to a private cloud-based IT infrastructure, with the use of HP blades (, to support its hospitals and other operations more efficiently.
