NTL is being investigated by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), after it received complaints that the telecom’s free internet promotion misled consumers.
A spokesperson told PC Advisor that 48 NTL customers had complained about NTL’s service.
He added that the areas under investigation were that NTL misled consumers over the actual availability of the service, that consumers were experiencing unreasonable waits for the NTL sign up CD and that the telecom under estimated demand for the service.
NTL has already pulled the advertising campaign.
The ASA spokesperson added that a number of complaints had also been received recently against other ISPs and Internet companies – including 4Unet, LibertySurf, Madasafish and RedHotAnt.
“Its not surprising to receive this many complaints – There are a lot of companies competing very aggressively in this area – sometimes it seems they don’t think through the implication of such huge increases in demand,” the spokesperson said.
