PC sound supremo Creative Technology has partnered with Microsoft to provide a portable media player for the software giant's Media2Go platform.

Media2Go, the current codename for the software, has been designed for "the next generation of smart personal media players", allowing users to enjoy their music, video and pictures on the go. But no devices have been available to support it, until now.

"The Media2Go concept has struck a chord with consumers because it allows them to enjoy their digital music, photos and video in a way that no single device has been able to offer so far," said Todd Warren, general manager of Microsoft's Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group.

Creative's new devices are expected to be in stores by the end of year. According to the company they will be sleek and lightweight with storage capacity for more than 8,000 music files, 125 hours of digital quality video or up to 30,000 photographs.

"As a leader in portable audio devices, Creative is always looking at ways to enhance our customers' experiences," said the company's chairman and CEO Sim Wong Hoo.

Media2Go combines the playback and management functionality of an MP3 player jukebox with the viewing capabilities of a DVD player.

No price has yet been released for the devices.

The first Media2Go hardware reference design is available today based on Intel XScale processor. More information can be found here.
