This week we had a sneak peak at Seagate's range of FreeAgent data movers, which will be launched throughout Europe in March. The company said it's focusing on the need for storage devices to be secure, portable and easy to use due to the increase in the amount of music, images and data downloaded, carried around and shared.

This was reinforced at the Seagate booth at this year's CES (Consumer Electronics Show), which featured an 8ft high pile of photos and a 12ft pile of CDs that towered over attendees to demonstrate what can be lost if data is not backed up.

Simple-yet-effective methods of external data storage are becoming more important and Seagate has ensured its FreeAgent units do just this by simplifying the design and integrating it into the user's lifestyle. The data movers come in four models; Pro, Desktop Drive, Go and Go Small. Each enables access to content from anywhere as they can be synced to almost anything.

The FreeAgent Pro is available in 320GB, 500GB or 750GB capacities and includes dual FireWire 400, USB 2.0 and eSata. This model is also expected to be available in a 1TB version. The Memeo software that's included with the FreeAgent Pro enables automatic backup to five different types of device including Flash Drive, iPod and Seagate Internet Drive. Seagate is also offering anyone who purchases the drive 500MB of free, password-protected online space for six months.

The FreeAgent Desktop Drive is an add-on storage device for your desktop, available in 250GB, 320GB and 500GB capacities. It doesn't include any software as it's designed to be used as a plug-in-and-go device. Featuring a USB 2.0 interface and with a footprint no bigger than a stapler it looks a decent option if you want to conserve space on your desktop. Both this and the Pro version of the unit also feature base-mounted cables to keep your desk clutter free.

The FreeAgent Go, available in 80GB, 120GB or 160GB capacities, sports the same simple, contemporary, design. This handy little device enables you to carry your programs, browser, passwords, settings and favourites around with you rather than lugging about your laptop.

The 12GB capacity Go Small is even tinier still, easily fitting in your pocket. It features the same capabilities as the Go, enabling you to carry your desktop environment around with you.

Prices for these products have yet to be announced.
